This major work by one of Iran’s leading directors is a gripping portrayal of the conflict between modernity and tradition in Iran.

Leila and Reza are happy young newlyweds who seem to have everything. But when the bride learns she is infertile, her mother-in-law begins an all-out campaign to convince her that Reza should take a second wife, as permitted by Islamic law.

Artists
Born in Tehran in 1939, Dariush Mehrjui is regarded as an icon of Iranian New Wave cinema. In the early 1960s, Mehrjui moved to the United States and entered the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), graduating in 1964 with a degree in philosophy.
