Dara Afraz (1984) was born into musical family in Tehran. He started his musical education by learning tombak (hand drum) and tar (plucked lute) at the age of eight under the supervision of his mother, Parissa. At the age of 14 he started to play daf (Persian frame drum) after learning the basic techniques from his sister. At the age 16 he debuted on daf in his first official performance with Parissa at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. Afraz is a specialist of both the tombak and daf.
Afraz has performed at the World Sacred Voices festival in Laussane, Switzerland and in many groundbreaking concerts in Tehran. He has been a sought-after teacher since 2003. Afraz now lives in Los Angeles and continues his musical career while pursuing an education in multimedia designs.
